3 Las Vegas Hotels That "Get" Wheelchair Accessibility

Las Vegas, Sin City. One of the top tourist destinations for adults around the world.

The glitz and glamour of this city is mostly concentrated on Las Vegas Boulevard, more commonly known as “The Strip”, an area known for it’s beautiful and expensive hotels, resorts, casinos and live entertainment venues. Whether you are into gambling or not, Las Vegas offers something for everyone to do that they will love.

Traveling to Las Vegas (or anywhere, really) begins with the hassle of finding suitable accessible accommodations. A quick search on any of the more popular websites that promise the lowest rates on hotels will leave you more often than not, frustrated. Somewhere under the hotel “amenities” you will find something along the lines of:

– Coffee Maker: check

– Morning Wake-Up Call: check

– Wheelchair Accessibility: check

Upon further inspection of the hotel in question’s website you come to realize that there is no further information on the hotel’s so-called wheelchair accommodations.

How big is the room? How tall are the beds? Are they platform beds? Can you bring your own handi move lift? Do they HAVE a handi move lift? Is the bathroom equipped with a roll-in shower? Do they have shower benches? Can you fit your wheelchair underneath the sink? Are there automatic door control buttons? Are there instructions in Braille? so on and so forth…

Yet most properties believe that a “check” symbol answers all of these questions, and now you have to go through the trouble of either emailing the hotel in question or calling them on the phone to ask your questions.

Yes, all disabled people have different needs and it would be impossible for hotels to outline and answer 100% of all accessibility questions on their website, however, most of them don’t even bother to give basic information.

Below you will find 3 hotels/resorts on the Las Vegas strip who have gone through the trouble of adding information (some basic, some more in detail) on their wheelchair accessible hotel rooms for their wheelchair using travelers and visitors with a physical disability.

The Mirage Hotel and Casino – Las Vegas, NV

The Mirage does an awesome job when it comes to providing their patrons with information about their wheelchair accessible hotel rooms. On their website you will find a floor plan of all 4 types of rooms: Fully Accessible King and Queen rooms with hand-lift! as well as Accessible King and Queen rooms, without a handi-lift. They also have two bedroom wheelchair accessible Hospitality Suites with roll-in shower, wheelchair accessible Tower Suites with roll-in shower, wheelchair accessible Mirage suites with roll in shower as well as one and two bedroom wheelchair accessible Penthouses with roll-in showers.

Talk about wheelchair accessible LUXURY!

Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas – Las Vegas, NV

The Four Seasons is another property that a lot of other hotels could take a cue from when it comes to providing their guests with information on their wheelchair accessible hotel accommodations. On their website, they outline the 8 different types of wheelchair accessible hotel rooms they have available, including their Strip View accessible rooms, Deluxe rooms with roll-in shower, Superior Accessible rooms and their Sunrise/Sunset Accessible Suites, just a name a few. Check out all of their wheelchair accessible rooms here.

Treasure Island Hotel & Casino – Las Vegas, NV

The Treasure Island Hotel and Casino boasts 71 (count them) 71 ADA compliant hotel rooms on their property (can you say universal design?). While they don’t have too many details on their accessibility features, they do name a few, like extra wide doorways, shower chairs and toilet seat raisers available upon request, outdoor heated pool lift equipment, as well as hearing impaired kits which include door knock light, call alert, bed shaker, vibrating alarm clock, visual alarm and TDD upon request.

There you have it. Go on and book your stay today. What’s YOUR lucky number?

Oh, and if you’ve been to any of these hotels, why not write a quick review about them? What’s your opinion?

Rounders Reveals All

The movie Rounders show two friends trying to work together to pay off what’s to them a massive debt resulting in all kinds of trouble and issues for the pair. Today nothing has changed with players pairing up to make ground breaking profits or alike the characters played by Matt Damon & Edward Norton to pay off debt.

As with underground card rooms and the dangers and violence shown in Rounders; many a player around the world get themselves into risky situations with no return. The movie for some players is an every day reality which could have been avoided all together with a different kind of thinking. Players in trouble in today’s world have various backing systems and many a guide on bankroll management to avoid these situations.

The bad boys in poker will always be found hiding out in underground illegal card rooms though regardless of laws or possible outcomes. Simply it seems that casinos and legal rooms are just not enough for them, they seem to thrive on unnecessary risks and the company that goes with such risks.

As the rounders story depicts, without the security of legal online rooms and casinos many unethical poker activities do occur. Colluding, cheating, beatings the list could be endless. It is not surprising to anyone that there are casino and gaming laws for a reason! Fancy going heads up with a Mafia Don? Win or lose against him your dead meat outside your countries national security measures and in reality there is nothing you can do about it. You made the bed you lay in it, alike the rounders characters. There indeed can be a point of no return.

If we are not worried about the threat of violence, incurring debts and other associated risks in playing out of the gambling laws boundaries then maybe one should worry about the law itself. I don’t know what legal complications could have been involved for Mike McDermott and his mate worm; however these days they are HUGE. Not just for the illegal players but of course for the card room “runners” also. Get caught, get prosecuted with the full force of the law. It really makes one wonder what benefit there is for anyone wanting to be involved in such activities.

I guess the movie Rounders does show us some benefits of gambling out of the constraints of our gambling laws throughout the world. One though must weigh these benefits up against their opposer.

Taxes would be one. For a professional gambler an illegal card room holds no records of winnings (and their own debtors and income as far away from sight as possible). Winning on a daily level in an unauthorised card room can be beneficial for tax evaders. On the other hand, tax evasion just adds to your list of criminal activities so is not advised.

In illegal card rooms the rake is far less. Rake can be a killer in casinos what with the legal gambling houses providing services such as dealers, drink waitresses/waiters and a perfect poker environment including security and all in all a brilliant atmosphere. This brilliant atmosphere although provided in some illegal rooms isn’t for the benefit of the player, but the owner. The security guards are in general not there to protect you as one example! As for the rake, although it is cheaper you are feeding the hands of the unlawful and also putting yourself at risk for legal complications (yes, legal complications stated again).

Out of site, out of mind may be another reason to play in an illegal card room. Many players do not want their live statistics plastered out across the world for all to see. Whether be for private and unknown reasons or for the big T word above being TAX. The confidentiality in illegal rooms is strict. See no evil hear no evil, unlike racking up with 10k at your local casino where every Tom, Dick and Harry can see your winnings, performance and losses.

Regardless of all off this, again Rounders indeed shows a true story. A story commonly seen throughout the world. A story of desperation of two young men who stepped across the wrong line with what seemed no path to return.

Advisor is made by most people in the casino gaming industry and online poker industry to do things right to avoid complicated mess and troubles. Follow the laws, rules and regulations of gaming then you are unlikely to be harmed. I simply weigh up my decision without going into too much thought, a trusted online gaming site is going to treat me better then an illegal card room owner that would tie me to a chair and have me beaten for ten bucks!

Advantages and Disadvantages of Playing Online Poker Vs Playing at a Poker Table

The differences between online poker and more traditional poker table games are sometimes not quite as obvious as they may seem.

Unlike sitting down at a poker table with friends, or even strangers, online poker has an added dimension these days. There is a lot of pressure from many quarters to make online poker illegal, particularly in the United States. You will almost always know if the table game you are playing is in an area where poker is legal, but it is getting harder to know if this is true about poker played online.

In spite of these gray areas, millions in the U. S. and around the world regularly enjoy participating in online poker games from the comfort of their own homes. Just to give this some perspective, in 2005, the revenue from online poker was reported to be in the vicinity of $200 million.

Not only is online poker generating huge amounts of revenue and creating new millionaires, among players, site owners, and affiliates of poker sites, but, due to its pervasive influence, the appeal of poker in general is growing. The public is not only gaining knowledge about poker, but is showing an interest in all things poker. From the tables to the chips at the table, to the people who play at the tables, poker is huge.

Poker players such as Chris Ferguson (Jesus), Annie Duke, and her brother Howard Lederer (The Professor), and Hoyt Corkins (The Alabama Cowboy), to name a few, had never been heard of by the public a few months ago. Now they are celebrities in their own right. Even people who have been celebrities, such as Jennifer Tilly, Ben Affleck, and Mimi Rogers have traded in the bright lights of Hollywood for the green felt of the poker table – at least on occasion.

While many of these famous people play in tournaments sitting at the table with the celebrities of poker, most mortals enter the poker arena via online poker websites such as partypoker.com, pokerstars.com, ultimatebet.com or fulltiltpoker.com.

Sitting at a poker table can be intimidating, particularly for the new player and just is not that inviting for the beginner. They are apt to feel out of their league, and, if others at the table have more experience or are strangers, they are apt to feel intimidated.

The online poker experience is quite different. There is an anonymity which protects the psyche of the “newbie”. They can watch games as long as they want before actually taking part. Additionally, most online venues will have tutorials and practice games for beginners that help ease the learning process. Sometimes the main site will actually have a completely separate site set up strictly for the beginner. Another helper for the beginner is that online games tend to have buttons labeled for the various actions and often include on-screen prompts for the appropriate action.

Internet poker sites also offer a range of limits so that the beginning player can actually start betting pennies. Not only is the betting easy, but so is the access. Unlike a table game, an online game can be found 24 hours a day from anywhere in the world that there is a computer and an Internet connection.

There are, however, two drawbacks to playing online, particularly if one’s goal is to eventually participate in the highly televised poker tournaments occupying more prime time slots on TV. First, there is the hurdle of actually sitting and playing at the table itself. No amount of online preparation can duplicate or offset the first few times you find yourself in a chair across from a Doyle Brunson, Chris Moneymaker, or Daniel Negreanu.

Second, although it IS possible, it is exceedingly difficult to bluff at an online poker game and even harder to learn how to read your opponents.

Look on the bright side, however. It IS easy to learn basic poker skills and improve your technique online, and you won’t have to worry about your poker face!

Finding the Best Online Poker Sites

So you want to be a big shot, stay cool and win that freeze-out tournament. You have an inkling that poker is something you were born to do, but where you live no one you know knows the rules, there is no casino in over one hundred miles and you’d feel intimidated anyway. So the option is to find the best online poker sites you can and get cashing in your hard earned chips.

When looking for online poker sites you have to find the ones that are right for you. Here’s a few tips when looking for a site:

– Find one that has a free trial period or offers you some free incentive. That way you can get to try out the place before committing to regular payments or subscriptions.

– Stay away from scams that promise an easy way to ‘beat the system’. The only way they beat the system is by getting you to give you their money instead to all the genuine poker sites.

– Get yourself to a listing site that gives up to date reviews and details of events gong on at all the mainstream poker websites. Not only will you get a feel for what is out there, you get to see which ones are consistently popular.

– You can find programs that allow you to try poker games without using real money-this gives you the chance to develop your skills before you bet away your life savings.

Online poker has been around since the late 1990’s but it is really in the last six or so years that its popularity has soared. TV tournaments have helped to promote the game as well as many celebrities now being seen taking part. But it is online where you can play without needing to be part of the rich and glamorous jet-set. Heck, you don’t even need to get dressed! You can open up a beer and let the dog out between hands while playing at some of the best online poker sites the internet can offer.

You can chose to play against other people who like you enjoy pitting their poker wits against real live opposition or you can also find games that offer computer opponents for you to do battle with. One of the benefits of virtual opponents is that you don’t have to wait for the right number to show up or be delayed while one of them takes a bathroom break.

The best online poker sites for you are the ones that offer you the kind of experience you are looking for. Some want high risk, big money action, others just want some down time shooting the breeze with others over a friendly, less high stakes kind of game. So whether its five card stud that gets you going or it’s the hugely popular Texas Holdem you are after, the best online poker sites are waiting for you to pull up a chair and join the table.
